Abstract:
"In an era dominated by visual communication, illustration, as an essential form of visual
arts, plays an increasingly influential role in reflecting global issues and conveying ideas of
artists or specific groups. When illustration comes across environmental and ecological issues, a
large quantity of illustration art works dealing with these related topics can be found in mass
media outlets around us. However, due to the long process of creating a picture book, seldom can
we find picture books with both attractive story and scientific information that can educate the
public protecting species. This thesis aims to demonstrate the contribution a picture book can
make to protect endangered species by discussing the IUCN Red List and species diversity
issues, pointing out some shortages that can be improved in some biodiversity promotion arts,
analyzing the influence picture books may have on their readers and exploring how scientific
information can be combined with a visual appealing picture book.
