Abstract:
"Historically, women have used dress to gain added equality and upward mobility in the
workplace. Dressing in attractive, neat clothing that best suits their specific workplace
environment helps has helped women to be perceived by managers and clients as
decisive, innovative, reliable, and hard working, indicating to others their ability to do the
job well. Professional women in creative fields find it particularly challenging to dress in
a way that shapes the perception of their superiors and potential clients in desired ways.
Typically, individuals working in the creative industries have even more freedom to
choose their workplace dress, which allows them to align their dress closer to their
creative identity. However, while dressing to stand out and express individual style is
intended to and may attract professional opportunities, this must be balanced with an
awareness that a manager or potential client may not share similar values, artistic
vision, or taste. Creative professional women can find greater career success by making
workplace dress choices that both reflect their individual artistic identity and highlight
essential qualities, such as decisiveness, confidence, innovation, and the ability to
appeal to a variety of clients."
