Abstract:
"Graphic design has often been associated with fancy book covers and glossy magazines and predominated by functionality, form, and aesthetics. However, there is a huge potential which lies in applying visual design thinking to create social value. It is clear that in today’s era of ever-growing complex social problems—from healthcare and food to neighborhood services and community building—we can no longer turn to government and non-profit organizations alone. The solution to this is to look beyond traditional divisions and removing entrenched mental silos in the private, public, and non-profit sectors. New co-creation and collaborative processes are required to tackle these issues. This thesis will examine the evolving role of a designer as a
creative facilitator and the driver of meaningful social initiatives. She has the potential to
facilitate non-linear and non-hierarchical engagements for social innovation through co-creation and participatory design methods among multi-sector organizations—private and public sector, social enterprises and citizens. There is an opportunity for visual communicators to articulate the intangible value such in a way that can bring shared cohesion in the vision of the project.
The collaboration of the sectors will enable exchange of value, and thus this system will have
more potential to address the most complex societal problems. To understand the potential of
this collaborative system, this thesis is further built upon to address the problems of food
insecurity faced by low income population of Savannah by engaging with the food providers,
clients and the grass-root organization—Healthy Savannah."
