Abstract:
"This thesis focuses on combining surface and social design to create socially conscious products
using impactful messages, while leaving as little impact on our planet as possible. As the year
2020 approaches, Americans find themselves in a unique moment in history where a reality
television star is the president and the news headlines are surreal. Each day the headlines tell us
about the violence, injustices and deterioration of our planet. As a response to this overload of
information people are craving positive messages and reminders of hope, while some people have
also grown to be more socially conscious of the materials and products they support. At a time
when the world is on fire, literally and figuratively, it is the duty of artists, illustrators and designers
to use their energy and skills towards projects that benefit communities locally to globally. This
thesis will show how using illustration and surface design to create eye-catching socially conscious
products can be used as an outlet to support a variety of social projects."
