Abstract:
"This thesis explores the impact and relevancy of reportage illustration. While various
terms and titles have been applied to on-location drawing the commonality that is explored is the
creation of art by an artist from direct observation and experience. The illustrator serves as a
witness and visual journalist to document the stories unfolding around them. Through visual
documentation, the illustrator becomes the interpreter of the narrative and the resulting artwork allows the audience to see through the eyes of the artist. Several practicing reportage illustrators supplied their personal perspectives to the discussion within this thesis. To personally test the relevancy that reportage illustration provides, I undertook embedding as a sketch artist with two fire departments. The resulting artwork documents the daily narrative of the firefighters and serves as a historical visual record of their day-to-day."
