Abstract:
"'Counterpoint The Climb' is a conceptual urban/suburban landscape photography project that examines the subject matter and aesthetics of both the banal imagery associated with the New Topographics movement and the sublime nature of Modernist photography. This research addresses concepts of man v. nature, the change in perception of man-altered landscapes between the 1970s and today, and how beauty is created not in the idea of 'banal is beautiful' alone, but through the fusion of the sublime with the banal, where beauty is found within the intersection of the counterpoints of each. Through a merging of thematic elements both emotive and formal, banal and stoic/clinical, 'Counterpoint The Climb' culminates in a series of images that metaphorically reveal the perfection humans try to build towards and always fail to reach."
