Abstract:
"Nostalgia is a frequently visited theme by artists in history- the aesthetic choices used to make nostalgic imagery changes throughout time. Aestheticizing nostalgia relies not only on the retelling the subject matter that was lost, but utilizing the design choices that are associated with a rosy retrospection. Genres such as Romanticism and Retrofurism both aestheticize the nostalgic, but with very different design choices. The lighting and color choices used in these timepieces are enough to indicate that they are
from different places in time. Understanding the aesthetics of nostalgia as a guide for
lighting environments can change a scene’s location without altering its formal structure.
Challenging cgi environment creation to bypass modern day understanding of lighting,
and apply an older understanding of nostalgic aesthetics to inform the elements of
world building, adds layers of authenticity and a new realism that is lost in digital production."
Abstract:
*Includes a short animation reminiscent of the author's trips to Sumida, a quiet, small town near Tokyo, depicting rainy scenes with nostalgic music, with the goal of replicating "elements of both of the Romantic art styles and the Retrowave art style," achieved by "creating a variety of render layers and assembling them in post the way a painter would"--Thesis, page 21
