Abstract:
"Urbanization over the years has played an important role in the growth and development of Accra,
the capital city in Ghana. This development saw the increase of key social elements such as
housing, infrastructure, employment opportunities and many other things that improve the quality
and standard of living. This growth however was not matched with the influx of people from
other places who move to Accra in search of a better situation compared to what they have where
they are moving from. This resulted in the creation of slums with the most popular in Ghana
being Old Fadama, which has been in existence since 1981. Through the use of indigenous architecture,
which has been the staple of construction in Ghana before urbanization, the residents can
have a better structured and well thought out means of living that gives them a sense of place and
belonging and also further help improve on their living standards."
