Abstract:
"This thesis examines the cinematography in a mixed genre film of comedy and fantasy. As the cinematographer for the film production of 'Heroes in Our Minds' (2018), during my graduate year, and drawing from many films and different forms of media for inspiration, this film will serve as the creative component to be submitted together with the written thesis. Presented in the first section is a historical perspective of the changing role of the cinematographer as a visual artist in the production of a film. This corresponds with developments in camera technology that impacted cinematography and established cinematography as a specialized field. The focus will be on key moments in contributions by the cinematographer to film development and production as it relates to cinematography. The next section proceeds with the cinematographer’s engagement with creative design, development and application of the unique ‘visual style’. This section provides a structural analysis of the definition of cinematography and the use of cinematic techniques that enable accurate lighting, camera angles, composition, framing, and storytelling. The final section will be how I applied these elements of cinematography in the production of a mixed genre film of comedy and fantasy in 'Heroes in Our Minds.'"
