Abstract:
"This thesis is a costume re-design for the David Bowie jukebox musical, 'Lazarus.' It takes a
modern-day stage musical back in time to the 1970s. The inspiration of the design comes from
the beginning of David Bowie’s career and when Thomas Newton, an alien from Anthea in
search for supplies for his dying home planet, is first presented in the book and film, 'The Man
Who Fell to Earth.' Research focuses on 1970s fashion, David Bowie’s androgynous style, and
how David Bowie and androgyny in fashion are still relevant today. The costumes will highlight
the isolation of Newton as he is stuck on Earth and why 'Lazarus' set in the 1970s is exciting and
significant vision for a modern audience to see."
