Abstract:
"The Chinese media refers to those children with autism as 'children of the stars' because, like stars, they 'shine' individually but cannot often connect with others in society. In China, a country of 1.4 billion people, there is one autistic child for every ninety children. However, there is no autistic friendly environment for them to live, receive treatment and learn. Most support comes from non-governmental organizations founded by parents of autistic children. Their families expect society to understand and accept them so that they can gain the abilities to live alone. Thus, a professional, healthier environment for this group of people is important. This thesis focuses on the types and features of the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) to discuss how ASD children interact with the surrounding environment and explores how interior designers could help to bring them out of the shadows of society."
