Abstract:
"This thesis analyzes the ways in which autobiographical comic book creators and graphic
novelists implement elements of fantasy fiction and magical realism to portrays the events of
their perceived reality. By deconstructing the illusionary tactics of the comics medium, this
thesis will justify the use of fictive storytelling in works of autobiography and fiction based on
life. An analysis of David Small’s 'Stitches,' Farel Dalrymple’s 'The Wrenchies,' and Stephen
Anand’s 'Bhimayana,' will show that manipulating the traditional rules of comics, codifying the
self as character, and embellishing the truth with metaphorical happenings are methods an artist
may use to represent the 'emotional truths' of life."
