Abstract:
"This study examines methods of how animation and film apply traditional art and cultural
symbolism to their plots and aesthetics. Despite Korea’s unique beauty and history, the animation
industry has rarely used its traditional art and culture for inspiration. The philosophy, architecture,
painting, porcelain and attire of the Korean Joseon Dynasty are rife with deep meaning and historical
significance that could be used as the basis for an animated show. This project applies the methods to
those traditional Korean arts and legacies, culminating in the creation of an art book that presents the
findings of this study in a tangible way. Through the visual component, producers are encouraged to
create a show centered around the rich traditions and history of Korean culture that will inspire
audiences to learn more. Because Korean history has distinctive eras, the show’s success has the
potential to trigger many future projects."
Abstract:
Includes images of the author's art book for an original fantasy animated film, "Treasure Angels-Morning Nation." The plot follows the adventures of a South Korean middle school student who must foil the plan of Huksa, "a thief of history," to steal the ancient treasures of the Joseon Dynasty and alter Korea's history.
