Abstract:
"Urban heritage is one of the primary symbols of human evolution through history and reflects
the capacity of human to overcome surrounding environment. Heritage means inherited civilization
of predecessors. It is not limited to the language or literature or thought alone, but it also
includes the physical and sentimental elements of the community together with thought, philosophy,
religion, science, art and architecture in a society. Urban heritage is the container of urban civilization. Urban heritage records history and preserves
identity of the city. The urban heritage contains many economic values and benefits as
one of the sustainable resources of the city. It is a way to preserve the cultural, urban and social
values of the city. Maintain the urban heritage is a feature of developed countries. The more
countries developed culturally and economically, the more they took care of their urban heritage
and worked to preserve it and protect it from loss. Slums in the cities emerged due to the neglect
of historical buildings, which over time became slum areas. Jeddah has suffered from neglect of
heritage buildings for a period. As a result, some of these areas have turned into slums. Al Ruwais
is one of the areas that have been affected by neglect until part of it is turned into a random
area. This thesis discusses how to revive the Hijazi heritage related to the city of Jeddah through the
development of the slum area in Al Ruwais. The revival of the Hijazi heritage means buildings,
culture, social customs and traditions, history. The aim is to educate people of the Hijaz culture.
In addition to turning a slum area to become a history tourist interface of Jeddah.
