Abstract:
"The loss of my father during my twenties brought about a way of painting that has inspired my thesis body of work. I create works that process my own experiences of grief, loss and the beauty that has brought me hope. In my work, I ask questions about how this beauty exists and how people are so deeply affected by it. Through a metaphorical and spiritual journey that relates deeply to water and its many facets, I create billowing forms that express different levels of triumph over the journey of loss and grief. The unexpected beauty that arises out of these experiences leads to comforting yet haunting and unfamiliar shapes that seem to exist in an otherworldly way. Large scale acrylic paintings are created through the use of pouring watered down paints that are manipulated by my hand to control a material that is not easily controlled. Layers of paint mimic life and its very unpredictable qualities.
'Art begins when a man, with the purpose of communicating to other people a feeling he once experienced, calls it up again within himself and expresses it by certain external signs.'” -Leo Tolstoy, 'What is Art'?"
