Abstract:
This thesis explored the 1960 film script The Apartment, by Billy Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond. The goal of the thesis was to create a contemporary production design approach to a classic script. A strong emphasis was placed on the technical aspects required to actually film this visually updated story. These elements include studio set draftings, detailed architectural draftings, computer generated 3-D set renderings, hand renderings, set dressing and material design boards, as well as extensive research on building layout and design particular to the script. In addition, the thesis details the conceptual, creative and organizational processes of a pre-production art department.
