Abstract:
"As life unravels before my daughter and all of its beauty and ugliness appears at her feet, I have directed the path of my creative process to include her. As she faces a world that both scares and fascinates her, there are boundaries and variables to the protection I can provide her. The works that form this thesis are a meditation on my daughter growing up and encountering a world that doesn’t instinctively shield her the way I do. These works, in graphite and oil, depict moments that pass by without hesitation and those that linger. The choices between what areas remain graphite and those that are worked to a more completed painting, are the result of what most clearly communicates the message I am making. Carefully planned areas of the work that are rendered to show a thriving, living child are seen alongside unfinished pencil drawings and sweeping, emotional brushstrokes representing that which is uncontrolled or unknown, all coexist within the same substrate. Moments that eventually knit themselves to her soul and those that pass without a second thought are seen as singular compositions. While these works hold deeply personal significance to me, my daughter represents the universal soul. Those commonalities that bind us all. As possibilities present themselves to her, they also present themselves to my viewer. Allowing them to consider transitional periods in their own lives."
