Abstract:
"The use of flags in artwork is controversial. The distaste for its manipulation stems less from a
change in the physical object and more from the change in our perception regarding it. By
physically deconstructing and re-contextualizing the United States flag a more complicated
narrative is brought to bear upon the viewer. Through a multiplicity of processes, the flag is
physically and metaphorically reoriented to draw out new questions and interpretations. By
treating the United States flag as a medium and analyzing its formal qualities, materiality,
historical context and regulatory framework I negotiate facets of meaning in my work and in the
work of related artists."
