Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis paper is to examine the issues of contemporary portrait painting as opposed to traditional forms and methods and how those issues are addressed within my studio practice. Topics discussed will include the influence of personal educational and work experiences as related to their effect on my approach to painting. I will also examine the use of digital photography as a basis for capturing the image, and also the role of the photography
session in prompting an important social component present within my process. Themes of nostalgia, memory, and relationships are present within my work and will also be discussed within this paper. Finally, I will look at the influence of contemporary painters including Gerhard Richter, Brice Marden and Luc Tuymans on my work. While acknowledging similarities with these artists and myself, I will also highlight differences between their work and mine through this paper as well as in my thesis exhibition, "Picture Day".
