Abstract:
"In Vietnam, the development and transformation of Socialist apartment buildings called Khu Tap The (KTT) under the impacts of the Renovation Policy in 1986 have caused the living issue of over-occupancy in very limited spaces. KTT inhabitants have adapted into the situation by building expansion units called 'tiger cages' which are hung on the façade of the buildings. These structures not only transform KTT, but also reflect the individual expressions as well as the social dynamics after globalism. Learning 'tiger cages' as a practical example of adaptability, this thesis addresses the conflict between emerging population and limited spaces by proposing a new prototype of collective housings, which are flexible and adaptable to facilitate complex future behaviors of the inhabitants. The thesis starts with the context and site analysis then identifies different approaches to flexible living. These researches build the foundation for the framework for the new housing prototype that will be adapted to the context of Vietnam."
