Abstract:
"In countries like Paraguay, we start to see the difference in socio-economic backgrounds and layers within the people, the urban setting, but especially the architecture as an association to major architecture that represents wealth and power in the surrounding public parks and plazas in the city of Asunción, Paraguay. Many historical events had taken place in the most important plazas and parks of the Historic Downtown of Asunción. However, in today’s contemporary Asunción the relationship between the public spaces and city have collapsed. The rapid population growth of the Paraguayan informal settlements, the displacement of families due to flooding in the Chacarita Baja area, and the lack of provision of refugee areas by the government have led them to occupy the public parks and plazas as a result. By focusing on the issues of habitational crisis and sense of place in the developmental context of Paraguay, This thesis will establish the role of minor architecture to encode the vacant spaces. By exploring and identifying the major architectures that surround the site, to create spatial interventions that challenge the conventional thought of public space."
