Abstract:
"The picture book as a form of book art has been evolving for more that 300 years, changing
along with the culture and the society. Being a story told through pictures, it is an artistic
statement on the certain topic expressed through the visual narrative. Like any form of visual art,
picture books are developed through the prism of author’s experiences that evolve and change
over time. Together with the purpose of the book, market peculiarities, local culture, picture
books have become a form of visual narrative that is a subtle reflection of its creators and
environment. In order to better understand what forms this unique set of illustrators’ ideas for a
picture book it is necessary to explore the artists’ experiences that become significant for their
visual thinking. This thesis will provide an analysis of the system of experiences that impact the
illustrator’s visual decisions in picture books. Cultural, social, professional and personal factors
of influence will be discussed in this research. Through case-studies and comparison the
conclusion about aforementioned factors will be derived and the influences that form the visual
thinking of a picture book artist will be discussed."
