Abstract:
"In a transcultural world authenticity has to do with an inventive present, one that
unites traditions and creates new creative expressions. This thesis aims at developing
a transparent supply chain model for premium brands wanting to engage in the
development and production of authentic products that have a real sensitivity and
respect for cultural traditions. In addition, a new definition has to be done of what
authentic means in the context of transculturation, one in which artisans are not
compromising what they consider traditional and that at the same time appeals to a
culturally aware consumer. Moreover, the role of the designer in this context has to
be evaluated, what being a bi-cultural designer really entails and what needs to be
done in order to establish a true collaborative environment between bi-cultural
designers and artisans. Finally, I will assess the social impact for the artisanal
communities and I will explain how the fashion industry can play a key role in the
quest for the protection of cultural diversity and traditional techniques."
