Abstract:
"It is a well known fact that, upon the end of World War II, many nazi war criminals fled
to South America seeking refuge - which they found. Brazil, in particular, offered a safe
haven to names including the infamous Josef Mengele, responsible for some of the
darkest atrocities humankind has ever witnessed. When one speaks of Brazil, however,
one hardly ever relates the tropical country to the nazi ideology - most commonly, one
relates it to festivities involving carnival, samba, soccer and paradisiac beaches. The
dark legacy of nazism, however, has grown slowly and steadily in the shadows of Brazil,
and as of 2015 NGOs pointed to over 200 thousand active members belonging to white
supremacy groups. The author of this thesis, therefore (being a Brazilian-Jewish
filmmaker), realizing the powerful reach and impact a movie might achieve, has set
forth as goals the use of visual storytelling to bring this dramatic issue to light. Being
such a taboo, delicate, controversial and even at times neglected subject, is it possible to
raise a healthy - and yet urgent - discussion and reflection through the use of effective
visual storytelling tools that were ultimately used towards the making of the film? Such
is the goal and objective of this thesis."
