Abstract:
"Cemeteries have always held an important role in the functionality of urban areas as a
sanitary measure of society. Their secondary role, as a civic force and important part of the
built environment is seldom considered however, despite the fact that they as integral parts
of neighborhoods particularly in urban areas. This paper will explore the significance of
Swan Point Cemetery in Providence, Rhode Island as the driving force behind the
transformation of the northeastern portion of the city from rural, swampy, farmland to one
of the city’s most exclusive streetcar suburbs in the late nineteenth and early twentieth
century. The cemetery’s role in treatment of the land, promotion and facilitation of civic
infrastructure like roads and trolley lines, and subdivision of land for domestic development
will all be considered as part of this paper."
