Abstract:
"The city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is characterized by a rich history from its foundation rooted in the industrial revolution, as a thriving business capital serving as the location of several global corporations’ headquarters, to its decline in the post-industrial era, upon which it has made great and notable effort to revitalize itself through sustainability. The industrial fueled economy inevitably created an environmental catastrophe, being credited as one of the dirtiest and least habitable cities in country. The severity of the environmental destruction of the city’s past emphasizes the power of its turn to green and sustainable measures in the act of its modern day reurbanization. The city is presently publicly committed to achieving a specific level of green building performance which will classify the city as one of the greenest cities in the world by the year 2030, however these sustainable measures do not translate to a humanistic level. Beyond infrastructural performance reaching a baseline standard, the city offers minimal opportunity for the people to actively participate in the sustainable revitalization. The city can stand to benefit from the addition of a location, committed to the same baseline architectural standard that offers its users a platform to gain knowledge and practice sustainability through agriculture, horticulture, permaculture, apiculture and so forth. This hybrid architectural beacon will solidify the new green and sustainable identity of the city, employing cutting edge technologies in the specified areas of urban farming practices incorporating urban bee keeping and indoor greenhouse farming to facilitate practices in a sustainable lifestyle. This urban agriculture center will serve to pay homage to the city’s industrial past and celebrate its turn to a sustainable future."
