Abstract:
"Text-based electronic communication has become a significant part of our daily lives with the development of information technology in the last fifty years. Words themselves don’t have emotions, they don’t talk or express, so to improve communication, emoticons and emojis have been widely used everywhere. However, emoticons and emojis often cause miscommunication, because of the cultural misunderstandings, literal interpretations by individuals, context in which people use them, technology issues, and an unclear design. This paper explores how to use emoticons and emojis in an appropriate way in order to help people to communicate more effectively. While using emoticons and emojis can cause miscommunication, many of the issues can be solved by graphic design, especially in the case of emojis. Compared to emojis, emoticons are less design related, but more language-based. There is a big opportunity to redesign the emoji system to provide people a better way to communicate. Better emoji design, based on substantial research, would lead to a universal, structural, objective and sophisticated visual language. A more personalized physiognomy design also provides a means for more accurate communication among people. Based on the research conducted for this project, an emoji app EmojiKit was developed as the visual solution for this communication problem (Appendix B)."
