Abstract:
"This thesis focuses on the importance of creating new models of design and architecture as a critical means of ensuring museum relevance and survival to Millennial audiences in the 21st century. According to 2010 U.S. Census Bureau statistics, Millennials are the most populous generation in history, comprising more than 80 million. Based on research provided by ad agency Barkley, Millennials are predicted to have the largest spending power ever, and they comprise the most important audience of the future for both cultural and commercial enterprises. Concurrent with an exploration of Millennial characteristics and desires, this thesis will discuss the introduction and evolution of museums as entertainment experience, with blockbuster exhibitions, live music, social gatherings, and other events held within specially designed buildings and courtyards. Along with these new uses, this thesis will discuss the emergence of a new archetype of museum design and architecture—museum as destination attraction—and what this archetype means for the future role of museums in attracting the crucial Millennial audience."
