Abstract:
Dynamic audio occupies a unique place in the discussion on the suitability of gaming as a storytelling medium. Toward the end of the twentieth century, advances in digital technology allowed
interactivity and narrative to coexist in ways that were previously difficult or impossible. This study provides an overview of several of the key roles the dynamic soundtrack can play in contextualizing gameplay objectives. Because of Hideo Kojima’s many interesting explorations of the cutscene/gameplay relationship, the study focuses on the Metal Gear Solid series to show that the interactive medium’s increasing power to express complex narrative themes comes, in large part, from its ability to present the player with a rich, cohesive and responsive real-time
soundscape.
