Abstract:
The central government of the United Kingdom is currently facing mounting pressure to devolve further powers to the regional governments of Scotland and Wales. Within the past two years, both Scotland and Wales have released Historic Environment Strategies that that discuss the importance of historic resources and landscapes within their respective regions. This thesis contends that their timing is not coincidental. It identifies these Historic Environment Strategies as products of a tradition propagated by the nation-state of using history and heritage for political ends. Further, it locates them within current trends towards devolution in the United Kingdom and regionalism in Europe. It argues that by officially claiming ownership of heritage, the governments of Scotland and Wales can reaffirm their limited separation from Britain and assert their claims to greater political autonomy at this critical juncture.
