Abstract:
Illustrators have produced cutting-edge artwork that has branded and supported the music industry for decades. While talent usually drives success, the album covers and festival posters assist in giving a band an identity that not only helps sell its music, but also fills seats at shows. Successful illustrators who have complementary skills with type and graphic design have an edge over their competition in this genre since both image and lettering must work together to create a compelling and fresh design. This thesis will be examining poster and album art that has created successful identities for bands, as well as designs that fall short, having little to no impact. The research will investigate how hand
lettering integrated with illustration has influenced the music industry to the point that it has actually shaped the landscape of modern music.
