Abstract:
By using non-verbal elements such as miming, animators can establish the communication of the characters in animation films. This thesis will demonstrate how miming affects character animation and how it promotes humor by a series of cues and signals. Animated films, such as The Illusionist, Triplets of Belleville and Wall-E will also be reviewed in order to explore non-verbal communication as a way to enhance performance in character animation. Non-verbal acting in live action will also be compared with non- verbal acting in animation.
In character animation, when it comes to actors’ comedic performance, miming is the key to physical comedy, especially for characters acting without dialogue. Animators explore these non-verbal elements to create characters that use physical comedy in the same way as comedic live action cinema.
