Abstract:
This thesis is a compilation of four personal essays that use nouns as a framing device to highlight the contradictory nature of words and their assigned meanings. As the function of nouns within the English language operate as a common thread that unites the pieces within this collection, this thesis hopes to engage readers in analytical reasoning by setting forth several definitions that can be applied to the same word at the beginning of each essay. The defined nouns offer multiple, often contrasting, interpretations of people, places and things as they relate to themes found within the text. The goal of this work is to use a specific element of language to question, focus and assess the larger idea of assigned meaning for communicative value as it is applied to the written and at times spoken word.
