Abstract:
Documenting my creative journey from early interest in cartoons and animation, to working as a CG artist, to years as a full-time rigging and animation instructor, I explore how knowledge of character development in animation applies to traditional picture book illustration. I describe my influences, inspirations, and experiences, and then detail my artistic process, which centers on developing characters through loose, spontaneous sketching and energetic line work. Ultimately, I experiment with these techniques to build a traditional portfolio aimed at the children’s picture book and editorial markets. This includes a description of my evolving illustration process, including references to my thesis project: a picture book dummy entitled Lulu Loses It.
