Abstract:
This
dissertation
accompanies
my
thesis
work,
which
consists
of
a
series
of
sculptures
and
installations
that
incorporate
the
American
flag
as
a
primary
thread
throughout
the
series.
I
explore
the
development
of
the
flag
through
multiple
government
processes
and
re-‐
contextualized
its
display
and
Iconography
through
my
own
work.
I
recognize
past
American
artists,
whom
at
their
particular
time
in
history,
paved
the
way
to
freely
explore
the
use
of
the
symbol
in
my
own
work
without
the
fear
of
prosecution.
I
conclude
with
the
full
realization
that
this
iconic
symbol
is
still
a
contentious
material
and
object
for
contemporary
artists
who
straddle
the
line
of
patriotism
and
desecration
in
contemporary
art
making.
The
American
flag
is
first
explored
as
an
object
through
the
historical
development
of
its
design.
Through
the
diverse
values,
ideals
and
standards
that
fall
under
the
concept
of
patriotism
the
American
flag
is
then
examined
as
a
symbol.
Finally,
subject
is
examined
through
the
artwork
of
contemporary
American
artists
who
risked
persecution
for
straddling
the
line
between
patriotism
and
desecration.
