Abstract:
"This research project is an investigation of homelessness in adolescents and the improvement of their psychosocial development through the application of defensible space and
place attachment. The thesis focuses on adolescents between the ages of 14 and 17 years old who can be categorized as either runaways or throwaways. The topic areas investigated include: place attachment theory, defensible space theory, homelessness, adolescent homelessness, adolescent
development, and design solutions for the homeless population. Data was collected through
literature research, case studies, interviews, and site visits to find ways the environment can impact the two main issues of adolescent psychosocial development: identity and prosocial behavior. This research resulted in finding different ways in which both defensible space theory and place attachment theory can be applied to the design of a therapeutic residential youth center to create an environment which helps increase social skills among adolescents and fosters healthy integration into society."
