Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to find solutions through interior design for some current society issues that are escalating in Saudi Arabia. The increasing need for places for men; especially young adults, to socialize, engage in business, or just to relax has become apparent. In addition, the increase of mental illnesses, such as depression and anxiety leads the interior designer to think creatively of creating healthy spaces that have the ability to heal. Besides healing, the spaces need to enhance their users’ productivity and their roles in their societies by promoting better mood, helpful skills, and positive ways of thinking. Therefore, by addressing the natural, the social, and the productive aspects, the study leads to a third place for sustainable healing in Saudi Arabia.
The main goal was to define criteria and guidelines that contribute in creating a productive third place for men who can avoid temporary mental illnesses and enhance several aspects in their lives. Thus, if the design aspects and the operational program achieves it goals successfully, then it would be the first step toward improving the future vision of the Saudi’s men center; a third place for sustainable healing that can help the society to be more effective and more productive.
