Abstract:
This Thesis presents our new genre: Positive Character Trait Reinforcement which
encompasses games that facilitate the development of character traits in young children. This
contribution is a flexible methodology that aids in the design of such games. The
methodology contains a set of principles to shape the game and guide the designer. Our
Thesis draws on research in children's psychology, gender sensitive education, and
educational games. The result is an individualized game design, providing the young player
with a personal and engaging game-play experience.
We provide the design of our game The Princess Adventure, to exemplify our
methodology. This game is for introverted young American girls between the ages of 8 and
11. We provide the example of individualized game-play, with play modes tailored to both
introverted and extraverted young girls respectively, contained within an afterschool
environment.
Our design represents only one example of the type of game contained within
Positive Character Trait Reinforcement. With this Thesis, we seek to contribute to both the
fields of character development and video games. We hope that the continued success of
interactive programs inspire alternative teaching to engage and entertain students while
successfully delivering lessons.
