Abstract:
"This thesis is an exploration of the architect’s role in culture making within a devastated third world country. An architect’s ability to “make” culture stems from the idea that architecture itself has the ability to influence, restore and even shape an entire culture. Following the 2010 earthquake in Haiti – where it was the buildings, not the earthquake, that killed over 220,000 people – the need for this conviction in design becomes most apparent. Consequently, many Haitians are now too frightened to even step foot in a concrete structure, thus creating a negative relationship between the architecture and its intended user. To correct this issue, reliable construction techniques must be implemented to create a safer built environment. And this environment should not only safe, but it should also educate the people on how it is actually put together." --Abstract
