Abstract:
The place one stands and the place one has been holds a power over an individual. Yet at
the same time this power, if it is allowed, can serve as a guide to empower. Perhaps it
is only then that a body can acknowledge its true self. Throughout history, the country of
Cuba has struggled with its independence and execution of sovereignty over the people and
culture. The purpose of this thesis is not to define a Cuban identity, but to propose an
architecture in which ideological and cultural signifiers will stimulate public discourse.
This investigation aims to define an architecture that will give a physical presence to the
silence felt within the city, in post-revolutionary Cuba.
