Abstract:
The experience of going to college can be very challenging for incoming freshmen. New levels of freedom and responsibility are realized, and as a result, many students begin to develop and struggle with mental health issues related to stress. My first year in college was met with similar obstacles and proved to be an overwhelming experience. Because of my past experiences, I can easily relate with incoming freshmen and the obstacles they encounter approaching and during their first year of college. A student’s initial encounter with a new school is met with an immediate adjustment period that plays a large role in how that student will identify their goals and aspirations during their time at college. This thesis investigates the underlying issues surrounding students’ academic success and their ability to effectively cope with stress during their first year in college. In addition, this thesis examines the potential for the integration of wellness settings into student living spaces and identifies the various benefits this will offer to those residents.
