Abstract:
The possibility of applying Feng Shui principles to graphic design is explored through analogy with the hypothesis that placing physical elements to guide the flow of energy through a physical space can be directly correlated to the designer’s task of composing elements on the page. When summoned to guide design decisions, Feng Shui goes beyond commonly referenced systems that are primarily based on canons of proportion to suggest colors, shapes and a compositional layout that is
derived from the content itself. Not to be regarded as a formulaic system, the aim of Feng Shui graphic design is to introduce a new and worthwhile strategy for connecting the designer to his or her own intuition, while providing a new way of thinking about design that aligns more fully with the content, thus manifesting in a richer end product.
