Abstract:
The following is a thesis on the needs and use for adaptive reuse and rehabilitation of industrial buildings in America. The cultural landscape is continuously transitioning as influences and events impact the people and the built environment. Through research and studies, a view of events will show how buildings transition in use and in relation to their surroundings. The focus is on conversion projects in America and more specifically in St. Louis, Missouri. Case studies in two historic industrial districts support the argument that the buildings represent the significance of industry on the economy and its impact on the built environment. The aim of this thesis is to establish “conversion” as a common term recognizable by the general population, advocate for the use of industrial buildings, and showcase the positive effects of historic preservation in America.
