Abstract:
A nutrition center will be designed in the U Street neighborhood of inner city Washington D.C. The goal of the center will be to help lower rates of obesity and chronic disease across all ages of the community while increasing acceptance, and providing knowledge and training of sustainable food. Seedling Projects will sponsor the center, in coordination with other non-profits. Interior spaces will be developed to support the goals of the center while addressing the physical and psychological needs of the community. The center will serve as a possible prototype for similar facilities across the country. Hands on lessons for small groups revolving around nutritious, sustainable food will be provided.
Abstract:
In order to design the center, an intensive literature review will be conducted. Scholarly articles relating to the influence of diet on overall health will be analyzed, along with secondary sources relaying the latest trends and benefits of the food movement, sustainable agriculture, and urban gardening. Numerous site visits will be conducted to gain a better understanding of specific programming needs through interviews and analysis. Sketches, photographs, field measurements, and written documentation involving both qualitative and quantitative observations will be utilized.
