Abstract:
Negative outcomes associated with bullying raise serious issues of mental health and behavior
problems among school-age children, yet little research seems to exist on the relationship
between the role of the physical environment and a safe and connected school social climate.
Over the years, many researchers have participated in discussions over the most effective
principles and applications for designing and sustaining the built environment for purposes of
reducing fear and crime, validating the theory that the physical environment is indeed a factor of
both the act of bullying and the perceptions of safety in regards to bullies. The goal of this thesis
is to surface perceptions of environmental conditions within educational facilities from both
middle school and high school students in order to identify possible interventions within the
schools’ built environment that can prevent or alleviate the issue of bullying for its victims or
potential victims.
