Abstract:
The
average
person,
when
hearing
the
term
“gypsy,”
might
remember
the
vivid
and
vivacious
Esmeralda
from
Disney’s
The
Hunchback
of
Notre-Dame.
Or
an
old
woman
begging
for
coins
on
some
European
street
corner
while
her
grandson
deftly
pulls
wallets
out
of
tourists’
pockets.
Or
perhaps
an
encounter
with
a
fortune-teller
and
her
ominous
crystal
ball.
Some
people
may
know
gypsies
for
their
music,
or
for
their
persecution - the
two
go
hand-in-hand.
After
several
encounters
with
evasive
psychics
in
Savannah,
Georgia,
who
appear
to
be
gypsies - or,
to
use
a
more
politically
correct
term,
Romani - I
decided
to
set
out
to
learn
more
about
the
mysterious
group
of
people
who
refused
to
give
me
the
time
of
day,
unless
I
showed
them
my
palms.
