Abstract:
Cultural sustainability is an element of a sustainable development framework along with environmental, economic and social objectives. It is a concept with a goal of keeping cultural identity in existence and productive over time by providing support for it. The small town of Lijiang, located in the high latitude southwest region of China, has a unique landscape and vegetation as well as rich history and wealthy cultural heritage. However, unmanaged tourism development has caused Lijiang to lose its cultural identity. The hospitality project proposed in this thesis aims to sustain the core value of the local lifestyle, educate neighboring business owners, and shift the direction of Lijiang’s future tourism development.
