Abstract:
Despite the poor energy situation present in Nigeria today, local architects have yet to incorporate more
sustainable design strategies in their building proposals. Given that energy-efficient buildings exist in cities
around the world today, there is an opportunity for Nigerian residential architecture to abandon its archaic
building design practices for a more environmentally friendly and efficient alternative.
This thesis' research will explore design measures that can be implemented to help bridge the gap that exists
between energy inefficient Nigerian residential homes, and a more environmentally responsive energy
alternative. It will explore the use of passive and active design strategies in residential building construction as
well as landscape design.
