Abstract:
This thesis investigates the parallels between architecture and blues music. A
blues composition is structured to allow the artist to create his/her own iteration or
invention through improvisation and storytelling. The architect uses these same
methods in the architectural design process; an architectural composition is founded on
basic principles, but the artists’ intuition tells a new story. Through abstraction of
parallel ideas, the architect not only can develop building form, but respond to its
context. In addition to exploring the relationship between architectural design and blues
music, this thesis tells the story of the blues; from its African origins to its exodus into
American culture.
Chicago was a crucial place in the development of blues music and annually
hosts the largest blues festival in the world. But, the city is without any venue that tells
the story of the blues in Chicago or a physical space to promote an appreciation of
blues music. The proposed architecture in this thesis was designed to promote an
appreciation of the blues and its impact on Chicago.
