Abstract:
There is a current trend in the United States to age-in-place. This, however, is a temporary solution to a bigger problem. As adults age, the desire to remain independent becomes challenged by their inability to complete daily personal tasks, such as cooking and bathing. Within the level of care options available to aging seniors, there are limited options of facilities offering support and services between independent living (needing no assistance) and assisted living (needing help with two or three daily activities). This presents an opportunity to create a new model for seniors that combines a shift in design and programming, and places within the dynamic, moving world of a cruise ship so as to better facilitate social interaction and connections and healthier lifestyles.
In order to understand the current perceptions associated with land based assisted living facilities and how cruise ships might improve them, the methods used to gather information were observations, focus groups, and questionnaires. Through implementing each of the suggested techniques, the data collected supports a more well-rounded approach to analyzing how elderly adults feel within current facilities and how other generations would feel about a senior care facility located on a cruise ship. Also, the procedures explore specific qualities the seniors resonate with in terms of socialization with younger generations.
